(Reuters) - Two police officers were fatally shot in Topeka, Kansas, on Sunday after responding to a suspicious vehicle report, and authorities said they were searching for a suspect believed to be armed and dangerous.
Corporal David Gogian, 50, and Officer Jeff Atherly, 29, received life-threatening gunshot wounds outside a grocery store and later died at a local hospital, according to a police statement.
One of the officers had reported shots being fired within a couple minutes of their arrival at the scene of the reported suspicious vehicle, police said.
Police identified David Edward Tiscareno, 22, of Topeka as the "armed and extremely dangerous" shooting suspect. Authorities found his car at a nearby home, but a search of that house did not turn up Tiscareno, police said.
"We're taking all the tips we can get," said police spokeswoman Kristen Veverka.
Gogian was hired by the Topeka Police Department in 2004, and Atherly had worked there since 2011.
