Alternative Advertising Techniques for Your Start-Up Business

Businesses are constantly being told these days that the best place for their advertising budget is online. Not only should they be investing in good SEO and PPC campaigns, they also need to spend time and money developing their website, social media profiles and backlinks. All of this is indeed important and essential to the success of any business, particularly those that are just starting out but it is also important not to neglect old fashioned (yet still incredibly effective) advertising and marketing techniques. Advertising in the real world still has value and there are still a great many folks out there (particularly the older generation) who still would rather find their goods and services in shops and by phone. Additionally, even those people who spend most of their lives online still have to venture out from time to time and they are not immune to a clever piece of real world viral advertising. But the important world here is viral. If you are just starting out then the chances are you won?t have the same budget as established businesses and certainly won?t be able to afford advertising on tv or on billboards, or in national newspapers. That?s why you will need to think outside the box and find new, cleverer ways of getting your company name out there. Here are a couple of suggestions:

(1) Ride Shotgun with the Newspapers ? Sure, you cant afford to get into the national newspapers, but you can get a flyer inside them in your area. All you need to d0 is print up some tip top marketing material and then strike a deal with your local newsagents to get it delivered with the newspapers in the morning. You should be able to agree a price between you and if you can?t, approach the delivery boys direct and see if they will do it for a bit of cash in hand.

(2) Plaster Your Company Name Everywhere ? This wont work for every business, but there is no harm in leaving free advertising flyers and putting up stickers and posters in places that you know potential customers and/or clients might be hanging out. This could include local coffee shops in the business district, or printers / copiers where a lot of businesses go. The most important thing is to get your brand name and what you do in their heads.

(3) Advertising Locally ? Local newspapers and TV channels are much, much cheaper than the nationals and sometimes more effective as they get to businesses that are more likely to want to deal with you.

(4) The Yellow Pages ? It may have seen better days but people still use the Yellow Pages. That same older generation who prefer to shop for goods and services in the real world always reach for the Yellow Pages when they are looking for a business of any kind. Advertising will cost you very little (sometimes it is free) and will give you a massive return on your investment.
