Griffin?s Military-Grade iPhone Case With Kindergarten-Grade Colors

Griffin?s Military-Grade iPhone Case With Kindergarten-Grade Colors

So tasteful.. Which soldier wouldn't want one of these?

Clearly the ?military? part in Griffin?s Military Grade Survivor case for the iPhone doesn?t refer to the color. While olive drab is an option, the majority of the rugged cases come in candy colors more suited to a pre-schooler?s toy box than the killing fields of, well, whichever countries the U.S is currently at war with.

That?s not to say it isn?t tough. The blurb says that the case has been ?independently tested to meet conditions outlined in US Department of Defense MIL-STD-810 and UK Department of Defense Def-Stan 00-35.?

The Survivor combines a polycarbonate shell with a silicone wrap to produce a rainproof, dust-proof case that will keep the iPhone safe, and a multi-position clip keeps it out of the way when you?re shooting people in the face. You can pick different colors for all three, which is exactly how I ended up with the monstrosity above.

For all its protection, the case is fairly cheap, costing $50 whichever garish color combo you choose. And amusingly, the folks at Griffin put a link for pastel-colored styluses on the product page, just in case you want to sketch a little drawing in the middle of a firefight.

Kang's Fastlane #3 - Retail Business

Now retailing isn't what you would really call fastlane I guess, so I'm just going to make it as hands-off as I could.

We currently have 2 showrooms in the country, operating like any other brick and mortar at the moment. We are targeting the mid-high end market, so volume is going to be manageable but margins would be thick enough to afford advertising and marketing. Also definitely going to be using my web dev and marketing chops to build customer lists for follow-up marketing and to encourage referrals.

The business is currently doing well, but does require quite abit of manual intervention which is the first thing that's going to change!

Recently hired a sales guy who's supposed to be really good so hopefully that helps. I have a ton of work for him to do so hopefully when all's said and done we would be able to have a really strong presence in the country and start considering expanding across the border.

Apple Patent Win: Good for Apple, Bad for Samsung, Lousy for ...

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

The jury in the Apple-Samsung patent infringement case concluded Friday that Samsung should pay Apple $1 billion in damages for ripping off features of Apple's iPhone.

This ruling is good for Apple (AAPL), bad for Samsung and other Apple competitors, and terrible for consumers, as Aaron and I discuss in the accompanying video.

The monetary damages here, though large, are almost irrelevant. Apple already has more than $100 billion of cash, and Samsung will barely miss $1 billion. And that's assuming the ruling stands up on appeal, which some legal experts think is unlikely.

More important is the precedent that this case sets, which is that gadget companies can successfully bring and win cases based on what might be described as "feature patents." One of the claims Apple made, for example, was that Samsung had infringed on an Apple patent that covered a "rectangular" phone. Given that all smartphones are rectangular, this patent and others like it could have a far-reaching impact.

Apple's success here may also cause Samsung and other competitors to think twice before incorporating basic features that people like about iPhones. And that could lead to competitive products being distinctly worse. Although Apple shareholders might like this, the precedent could hurt consumer choice.

Tell us what you think!

Star Wars Episodes II and III 3D re-releases officially dated for theaters in September and October 2013

Star Wars Episodes II and III 3D rereleases coming to theaters in September and October 2013

Before Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace came back to the theaters earlier this year converted for 3D, the plan was to bring the other five movies to theaters one at a time each year, but that has apparently changed. At the Star Wars Celebration VI event in Orlando (where we first found out about the Blu-ray release two years ago) Lucasfilm announced that Episodes II and III in 3D will be released in theaters back to back in fall of 2013, arriving September 20th and October 11th, respectively. Missing so far from the announcement? A reason for the back-to-back release or any word on Blu-ray 3D plans. In lieu of more details, although it means Attack of the Clones will come back later in the year than Phantom Menace did, with any luck this accelerated schedule is a good omen for the original trilogy's return. Of course, we'll have to wait and see what magic can be worked with those older film and special effects elements, however IGN apparently found an early preview of the Episode II 3D footage to be promising.

[Thanks, Rachael]

Afghanistan says Badruddin Haqqani is dead

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani network was been killed in an airstrike in Pakistan, Afghanistan's intelligence agency said Sunday, providing the first public confirmation of rumors that have been swirling for days about the key member of a militant group the U.S. considers one of the most dangerous in the region.

The Taliban rejected reports of Badruddin Haqqani's death, however, saying that he was alive and well in Afghanistan.

Haqqani's death would be a serious blow to the organization founded by his father, Jalaluddin Haqqani. The group, which has ties to both the Taliban and al-Qaida, has been blamed for a series of high-profile attacks and kidnappings in Afghanistan, particularly in and around the capital city of Kabul, and poses perhaps the biggest threat to stability in the country.

Shafiqullah Tahiri, the spokesman for Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security intelligence agency, said Haqqani was killed last week in an airstrike in Pakistan. He did not provide any further details, and would not say what information the agency's operatives were basing their conclusion on.

U.S. officials have declined comment on the reports.

But Tahiri's account is similar to one provided Saturday by a senior Taliban leader who said Haqqani was killed in a drone strike. It also hews closely to a version provided by Pakistani officials who said Saturday that they were 90 percent sure the militant commander was killed in a missile attack Tuesday in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region.

The Taliban, who are closely allied with the Haqqani network, rejected all reports of Haqqani's death.

Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said Haqqani is alive and in good health in Afghanistan.

"A number of media have reported that Badruddin Haqqani has been killed. We would like to inform all media that this rumor is not correct," Mujahid said in the email to reporters late Saturday. "Badruddin Haqqani is in the country and is occupied with his operational responsibilities. He is alive and healthy. The rumor about him being killed is more propaganda of the enemy."

In a telephone call with The Associated Press on Sunday Mujahid again maintained that Haqqani was alive.

The territory where the American drone strikes generally occur are in Pakistan's remote and dangerous tribal regions, making it difficult for reporters or others to verify a particular person's death. And the U.S. does not comment publicly on its drone program, which is widely reviled by the Pakistani public and has been a source of tension with Islamabad.

The al-Qaida-allied Haqqani tribe runs a mafia-like smuggling operation and occasionally turns to terrorism with the aim of controlling its territory in eastern Afghanistan. The Haqqanis use Pakistani towns to plan, train and arm themselves with guns and explosives, cross into Afghanistan to attack NATO and Afghan forces, then retreat back across the border to safety.

Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure and is believed to have played an active role in kidnappings, extortion and high-profile operations in Afghanistan. Tahiri said that Haqqani's responsibilities included arranging foreign suicide bombers, maintaining relations with other insurgent groups, recruiting Pakistani Taliban fighters for the Haqqani group and overseeing operations in southeastern Afghanistan and in Kabul.

"He was the mastermind of the organized suicide attacks in Kabul," Tahiri said, referring to a number of high-profile strikes in the Afghan capital targeting everything from hotels to Western embassies. Every time there has been a highly complex attack in Kabul involving coordination between multiple insurgents, American officials have pointed the finger at the Haqqanis.

In the latest such attack in June, gunmen stormed a lakeside hotel outside of Kabul and opened fire on Afghans having dinner, killing 18 people. The commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan quickly attributed the attack to the Haqqani network, which has long operated as a sort of arm of the Taliban in the eastern part of the country.

Still, there are likely people waiting in the wings to replace Badruddin, said former Afghan intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh, now an opposition leader.

"They are going to find another person to replace him. What I know is that his elder brother, Sirajuddin Haqqani, is playing a larger role in the Haqqani network," Saleh said in an interview on Afghanistan's Tolo television. He said until the group's ability to operate across Afghanistan and Pakistan is limited, "killing their commanders or leaders will have its effect, but not that large of an effect."

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter David Rohde, the department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.

The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability. The group has shown little interest in negotiating with the Washington, and has pulled off some of the highest-profile and most complex attacks in Afghanistan, although not necessarily the most deadly.

Associated Press writers Rebecca Santana in Islamabad and Anwarullah Khan in Khar, Pakistan, contributed to this report.

Obama-Romney race is focused on 7 states

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? On the eve of their national party conventions, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are locked in a close race to amass the requisite 270 Electoral College votes for victory. And the contest is exactly where it was at the start of the long, volatile summer: focused on seven states that are up for grabs.

Neither candidate has a significant advantage in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire and Virginia, which offer a combined 85 electoral votes, according to an Associated Press analysis of public and private polls, spending on television advertising and numerous interviews with Republican and Democratic strategists in battleground states.

The analysis, which also took into account the strength of a candidate's on-the-ground organization and travel schedules, found that if the election were held today, Obama would have 19 states and the District of Columbia, offering 247 votes, solidly in his column or leaning his way, while Republican Romney would have 24 states with 206 votes.

Obama won all seven of the too-close-to-call states in 2008, and they are where the race will primarily be contested in the homestretch to the Nov. 6 election.

Ten weeks before Election Day, the AP analysis isn't meant to be predictive but rather is intended to provide a snapshot of a race that's been stubbornly close all year.

Among the unknowns that could shake up the electoral landscape before November: the latest unemployment figures that come out early next month, an unexpected foreign policy crisis in Syria or Iran and the outcome of the candidates' October debates.

Both sides are working to persuade the 23 percent of registered voters who said in an Associated Press-GfK poll that they are either undecided about the presidential race or iffy in their support for a candidate.

To woo them, the campaigns and political parties, along with allied groups with access to unlimited financial contributions, have already spent an astounding $540 million on television advertising, according to ad spending reports provided to the AP. And there's more to come.

Over the past three months, the campaign took a sharply negative turn, at times becoming nasty and personal.

Obama sought to define Romney early as a ruthless corporate raider for his time at the head of a private equity firm in Boston, and as an out-of-touch rich man keeping secrets about his wealth. Romney, in turn, worked to cast Obama as a failed president on a host of fronts, primarily the economy.

Both candidates have hit road bumps: Obama saw the unemployment rate rise to 8.3 percent and gave Republicans an opening to argue that he was unfriendly to small business. Romney had a widely panned foreign trip and made a series of potentially problematic comments, most recently joking about the debunked conspiracy theory regarding Obama's citizenship.

The national party conventions, starting with Republicans here, who convene Monday and start with a full schedule on Tuesday, and ending with Democrats the following week in Charlotte, N.C., will set the parameters of the fall campaign, and could provide each side with at least a temporary surge of support in national, if not battleground state, polls.

While Obama has a clear advantage given his incumbency, Romney does have a path to victory ? though it's a steep climb.

He must win most of the seven most competitive states ? Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire and Virginia ? in order to reach the magic number. For instance, he can lose Ohio's 18 electoral votes and still become president if he wins the other six and hangs onto those already in his grasp. It's difficult to see a scenario where Romney wins without a victory in Florida, which offers 29 electoral votes.

Neither side expects a dramatically different playing field this fall.

"You know the states that are in play," said Obama's campaign manager Jim Messina. "I don't think there's going to be a surprise."

Romney's political director Rich Beeson makes the same point: "I don't think you're going to see the map go crazy."

Still, once their conventions are over, both campaigns will commission polls in the hardest-fought states to determine whether to shift their strategies. The candidates and their allied outside groups will pull money and manpower from states that are moving out of reach while relocating it to others they may now think they have a shot at winning.

"We're in a holding pattern," said Charlie Black, a veteran Republican campaign strategist and informal adviser to Romney.

Perhaps not for long.

With a huge cash advantage, Romney is considering trying to put more states in play ? and creating more state-by-state paths to reach 270. He's closely watching to see whether it's worth it to compete aggressively in Wisconsin, now that native son Rep. Paul Ryan is on the ticket.

The Republican National Committee and GOP allies have been advertising in the state in hopes of making it competitive; at least one poll shows they've had some success and the race appears close. Obama, who has a formidable campaign on the ground that includes the state's active labor and minority blocs, hasn't advertised there but might be forced to do so.

Romney also is eyeing a deeper investment in Michigan, where he campaigned Friday, and Pennsylvania, where Ryan was last week. Obama carried both states in 2008, but the GOP sees promise in the economically struggling northern industrial states, especially among working-class, white voters.

The Republican may have the money to expand the map.

August financial reports show that Romney's overall fundraising apparatus ? his campaign, the RNC and a separate joint-fundraising committee ? had roughly $177 million in the bank at the end of July. The reports are the most recent public data.

And to a greater degree than Obama, Romney also has amassed an untapped stockpile of general election money that he plans to use this fall. He can begin spending it immediately upon accepting the nomination for president at the convention's close Thursday night.

Obama and his comparable committees, in turn, had only about $127 million on hand, according to the most recent report.

He also must wait until he accepts his party's nomination on Sept. 6, the close of the Democratic convention, to start spending his general election money.

Unlike Romney, Obama isn't focused on expanding the map in earnest.

He's mostly looking to hang onto as many of the states he won four years ago, with Ohio being of particular focus. In recent months, Obama's standing there has strengthened, the unemployment rate has dropped and last week General Motors announced a $200 million expansion of a northeast Ohio plant to continue building the Chevrolet Cruze there.

Beyond playing defense, Obama's team is watching to see whether the political terrain becomes more favorable to him in Missouri in the aftermath of controversial abortion and rape comments by Rep. Todd Akin, a GOP Senate candidate.

The backlash has been fierce, and polls show Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill ? arguably the most vulnerable Senate Democrat ? having gained ground. Obama competed for Missouri four years ago but lost and hasn't run ads there this year. Romney has had a comfortable advantage there.

If they have the money to do it, both sides will engage in head-faking: spending money in places simply to force the other side to defend their home turf. For example, if Romney goes after Pennsylvania, which has voted Democratic in all recent presidential elections, Obama would likely have to spend money to defend it, limiting the amount of cash he'll have available to spend in more competitive states, like Florida or Virginia.

Centenarian sister helps Sardinian siblings set world record

Nine Sardinians were recognized Wednesday as the oldest living siblings, with a combined age of 818. The eldest sister celebrated her 105th birthday today.

By Nick Squires,?Correspondent / August 22, 2012

Could the rugged Mediterranean island of Sardinia harbor the secret to a long life? Experts increasingly think so.

The island has long had a reputation for longevity, with one of the highest rates of centenarians in the world. Now that reputation has been further bolstered with the discovery of nine elderly brothers and sisters who have a combined age of 818 years.

The Melis siblings were officially recognized this week by Guinness World Records?as the world?s oldest living siblings.

It can surely only be a matter of time before ?The Sardinian Diet? becomes the next big thing among Hollywood stars and well-heeled health enthusiasts.

All but two of the siblings live in the village of Perdasdefogu in a mountainous region of the island known as the Barbagia, which in the past was famed for banditry, feuding, and kidnapping.

Its unforgiving terrain has repelled outside invaders since pre-Roman times, ensuring a distinct gene pool that appears to have passed on longevity from generation to generation.

The Melis family ascribes its extraordinarily long lives to plenty of exercise ? walking up and down precipitous slopes to feed its sheep and goats, for instance ? as well as a healthy diet based around bread, cheese and pasta, all locally produced. ?

Family members speak particularly highly of minestrone soup, which is filling but low in fat and full of greens. The red wine they drink is unusually high in antioxidants, experts have found.

Being surrounded by around 150 children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren also keeps them young, they say.

The oldest of the siblings, Consolata, celebrated her 105th birthday today, while the ?baby? of the family, Mafalda, is a comparatively sprightly 78 years old.

?In my day women had to do all the domestic work, going to the standpipe to get water and to the river to wash the clothes. My grandchildren have washing machines and vacuum cleaners so when they say 'I?m so stressed,' I just can?t understand it,? Consolata told Italy?s daily Corriere della Sera.

One of the sisters, Claudina, 99, keeps in shape by walking to and from church every day, while a brother, Adolfo, 89, still works in a bar in the village and tends vegetables in his garden.

It was a family friend who approached Guinness claiming that the Melis siblings were probably the oldest in the world.

Guinness verified the claim in conjunction with the Gerontology Research Group in the US and announced the finding this week.

?The Mediterranean lifestyle is always held up as being beneficial to a long, healthy life, and Italians in particular feature prominently in the list of supercentenarians and centenarians,? said Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief for Guinness World Records.

?Seven out of the 70 people alive over the age of 110 are Italian, for example, and the world's second-oldest living person is the Italy-born Dina Manfredini, who was born in Emilia-Romagna," Mr. Glenday noted, adding that Ms. Manfredini now lives in the US.

?With all longevity records, genes and lifestyle are paramount, but luck plays a big part ? avoiding accidents and falls, and so on ? so to have such a large number of living siblings with an average age of more than 90 years is incredibly rare.??

The secret of Sardinians? long life is being studied by a scientific project called AKeA ? an acronym for ?A kent? annos,? a traditional toast in the Sardinian language which means ?May you live to 100 years.?

Scientists believe genetics play a key role in Sardinians? longevity ? the same surnames crop up again and again in the list of long-living islanders, said Luca Deiana, a professor of clinical biochemistry from the University of Sassari.

The only other region in the world that can match Sardinia for the proportion of centenarians is the island of Okinawa in Japan.

Self Improvement ? Forex Guide

Daily, hundreds of thousands of trades are created inside a currency exchange marketplace known as Fx. The phrase ?Forex? immediately stems fx rogue from the start of two phrases ? ?foreign? and ?exchange?. As opposed to other buying and selling programs including the stock market place, Foreign exchange won?t include the buying and selling of any items, bodily or representative. Rather, Currency trading operates by purchasing, offering, and buying and selling concerning the currencies of varied economies from around the globe. Since the Fx market place is really a intercontinental investing method, trades are created twenty-four hours a day, 5 times weekly. Furthermore, Currency trading is just not bound by any just one management company, which implies that Currency trading is definitely the only accurate absolutely free industry financial investing program obtainable these days. By leaving the exchange prices from any a single group?s fingers, it is actually substantially far more hard to even try to manipulate or corner the currency promote. With all the benefits related when using the Currency trading program, along with the intercontinental collection of participation, the Forex trading industry is definitely the major industry inside the complete environment.

Wherever among one trillion and one.five trillion equivalent U . s . bucks are traded over the Fx industry just about every and each day.

So instead than guideline you by way of a structured internet site with much more information by different sections; they usually utilize this pitch web page plus they normally pack it with details in addition to a ton of tricky offering. It has confirmed to get the craze and it is really gotten more challenging and more challenging for many EAs to industry their program without having these kind of pitch pages. It can be typically the situation with electronic merchandise and or/stuff you may buy on line. In relation to these make-money-online and Currency trading web-sites they usually use a great deal of flash to them and of course several important things to draw prospects in. In point of fact it is really not a lot diverse from every other type of promotion, most surely not the likes of other financial systems, and so forth. They must have some kind of charm and be aggressive. My summary is usually that regardless of whether it seems to be like it may be a rip-off, do your research anyhow and it might not be. It just is dependent. Some factors are symptoms, but in my view website design and style and difficult advertising usually are not immediate indications of the fraud.

Although inside the Foreign exchange Marketplace a little something to hope for might be charts and evidence.

Most fx possibilities investing is executed by means of phone as there are actually only a number of foreign exchange brokers giving on the internet foreign exchange alternative buying and selling platforms.

Foreign exchange Selection Defined ? A forex trading solution is really a fiscal currency agreement providing the currency trading choice customer the best, although not the obligation, to obtain or market a certain fx spot agreement (the fundamental) in a precise value (the strike value) on or just before a certain date (the expiration date). The sum the fx selection customer pays on the fx selection seller to the fx possibility agreement legal rights is termed the currency trading selection ?premium.?

The Foreign exchange Selection Customer ? The purchaser, or holder, of the foreign currency selection has the preference to both market the foreign currency choice agreement previous to expiration, or she or he can prefer to maintain the foreign currency solutions agreement until finally expiration and training his / her suitable to get a situation within the fundamental spot foreign currency. The act of doing exercises the foreign currency solution and getting the subsequent fundamental situation inside the foreign currency spot marketplace is called ?assignment? or currently being ?assigned? a spot place.

As I reported earlier mentioned, the foreign exchange investing is regarded as on the list of most rewarding and eye-catching possibilities for expense as any man or woman can readily do in your own home or office environment and from any a part of the planet.

For succeeding the Foreign currency trading, someone will not be demanded to try and do any on line advertising, advertising and marketing and so forth. The sole need inside the Currency trading is definitely the account that somebody is needed to open up with trustworthy and registered brokers, a pc technique and quickly web link.

Now, you?ve to get very careful when opening a Forex trading account with any broker simply because some could possibly be Rip-off. The Commodity Futures Investing Commission (CFTC) in US has jurisdiction in excess of all Futures and Fx action. When buying and selling from the foreign exchange markets, men and women should really only trade that has a CFTC registered entity that is certainly also a member in the Nationwide Futures Association (NFA) which is controlled by CFTC. For non-US broker/ financial institution entities, make certain the broker or financial institution is registered with that country?s ideal regulatory bodies.

The solitary most apparent response is certainly ? over the internet! On the net foreign currency trading offers you immediate entry to your fx marketplace and there is tons and many corporations on the market who?re in company only to offer with you on the web. Be vigilant, do invest time to obtain some very good currency trading schooling, once again this may be offered on the web and build your dummy account to trade in advance of you try and go dwell. For those who consider treatment and consider your time, there is certainly no explanation why you should not achieve success in fx trading so, have persistence and adhere at it!

Minn. Senate's Legal Costs Top $100K In Scandal ? CBS Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? The tab has topped $100,000 for the Minnesota Senate?s legal costs related to a lawsuit from a former aide terminated after an affair with the top Republican leader.

The Associated Press obtained copies of the latest two invoices totaling $17,719 from a private firm, Larkin Hoffman Attorneys, for work in June and July. Combined with legal bills going back to January, the Senate?s costs have reached $102,403.

Former senior communications aide Michael Brodkorb sued last month, alleging invasion of privacy, defamation and gender discrimination. He contends that female employees involved in similar relationships didn?t lose their jobs.

Brodkorb was fired in December after then-Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch relinquished her leadership role. Their affair later became public.

The Senate Rules and Administration Committee meets Friday to consider paying the latest invoices.

PFT: Seahawks still evaluating TO, Edwards

Jeff OtahAP

As the Jets continue to try to figure out how to fix their right tackle spot, the guy they thought would handle it is trying to get his career back on track.

Former Panthers first-round pick Jeff Otah, whose trade to the Jets was negated when he failed a physical, has been working out in Cleveland with LeCharles Bentley to try to get his feet back underneath him.

?I believe he?s definitely going to be ready this season,? Bentley told Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. ?At what point in the season, I?m not sure. As a former player going through my own medical issues, it wasn?t until I took a step back and let some of my own personal baggage go, with my particular situation, [that] my body really started to heal. And I think that?s similar with Jeff.?

Otah played just four games the previous two years because of knee problems, but there were conditioning issues as well. The Jets were willing to risk a conditional seventh-rounder on him, but after a week of standing around, they sent him back to the Panthers, who promptly cut him.

And in what must be a surprise to the Panthers, Bentley said Otah has ?a workman-type mentality, which is what he needs right now.?

?To go through what he?s gone through, it wasn?t exactly easy,? the former Saints and Browns center said.

Bentley said Otah?s already down 12 pounds to 340 since arriving. They prepare three meals a day for him at Bentley?s facility, and he doesn?t work out until he eats breakfast.

He also punches a clock, and watches film of the days when he played to his draft grade in Carolina.

?As good as he was, he wasn?t the best he?s going to be,? Bentley said. ?And once he understands that, I think it really drives home the point that, ?I?m here for a purpose.? Jeff Otah needs time here to get himself, not just back into the league, but back being the best player he can be. When he?s the best player he can be, he?s going to be pretty damn special.?

Getting him back on the field would be an achievement, and a pretty good advertisement for Bentley?s ability as a coach and a mentor.

Baby Shower Gift Ideas: 5 Items That Helped Me As A New Mom ...

I think back to when we brought our little bundle of joy into this world, which coincidentally is almost exactly three years ago! Time sure flies when you are raising children!

At my baby shower I received several helpful gifts from friends, but also forgot about many things that we would need when we arrived back home. This list will hopefully help you if you are a friend or family member deciding what to purchase for the new baby, or if you are a new mom looking to not forget essential items like I did.

Today I am compiling my list from giggle.com.

1. Socks. When it came time to bring my daughter home from the hospital, I realized that we only had one pair of baby socks! Since she was born in the heat of late August, it was something that everyone had overlooked.

2. Skin Care. Our daughter was born with a full head of dark hair, which also meant that we had to watch for cradle cap. She also developed a bit of eczema on her belly and had the dreaded ?baby acne? for a while. Having a great skin care set is essential for a new parent.

3. ?A comfortable outfit to bring baby home in. We received so many ?cute? outfits to bring her home in, but shortly realized that what we needed most was something basic, comfortable to her, and easy to change her into.

4. ?A way to change diapers on the go. Once baby is old enough to begin visiting others, it?s essential to have something functional to bring with you to lay them on for a quick diaper change. Many places you may take baby won?t be very child friendly, and it helps to have that extra layer of protection between your new baby and any surface you may have to lay them on.

5. ?Gift Cards. Gift givers may not realize just how helpful having gift cards are with a newborn. This allows the parents to be able to afford additional items that they need, but didn?t think of grabbing before the baby was born!

If you still find yourself looking for that perfect gift, check out the giggle Gift Finder.

Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: Walnuts May Improve ...

Healthy young men with a Western-style diet may be able to boost their sperm quality by eating a small packet of walnuts a day.

These are the findings of a new study that shows healthy American men in their 20s and 30s who ate a 75g (2.5 ozs) packet of walnuts a day were able to increase the vitality, motility and structure of their sperm compared to counterparts who did not eat walnuts.

A report on the study appeared online on 15 August in the Biology of Reproduction journal's papers-in-press section.

Infertility and subfertility is a common problem that affects about 70 million couples worldwide. Between a third and a half of cases are due to poor semen quality in the male partner, with scientists giving a number of reasons for this in industrialized societies: pollution, unhealthy lifestyles and the Western-style diet cited amongst them.

First author Wendie Robbins, of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and colleagues focused on the last of these, as they explained in their background information to the study:

"We tested the hypothesis that 75 gm of whole-shelled walnuts/day added to a Western-style diet of healthy young men would beneficially affect semen quality."

75 g is about 2.5 ozs, equivalent to one of those small snack-style packs you can get in the supermarket.

Walnuts are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which play an important role in maturing sperm and preserving the integrity of the membrane around the cell which in turn affects its ability to fertilize an egg.

In the Western-style diet, PUFAs are usually found in fish, fish oil supplements, flax seed and walnuts. Walnuts also offer an important source of linolenic acid (ALA), a natural plant source of omega-3.

For their study, which was partially funded by the California Walnut Commission, Robbins and colleagues enrolled 117 healthy men aged 21 to 35 who followed a Western-style diet.

The participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: 58 were asked to avoid eating tree nuts, and 59 were asked to eat 75 g of walnuts a day.

The researchers picked 75 g because other studies have suggested this is enough to change lipid levels in the blood but not enough to make healthy young men put on weight.

All the participants gave blood and semen samples before and after the study period, which lasted 12 weeks.

The researchers assessed semen quality using the traditional measures of male fertility. These include sperm concentration, vitality (living versus dead sperm), motility (how well they travel towards an egg), morphology (shape and structure), and chromosome abnormalities.

The results found at the end of the 12 weeks, neither group showed significant changes in body weight, body mass, or physical activity levels (these factors can also affect sperm quality).

However, the men in the walnut group had higher levels of omega-6 and omega-3 (ALA) fatty acids in their blood at the end of the study period than they did at the start.

The men in the walnut group also experienced improvements in sperm quality over the 12 weeks of eating walnuts, there were significant increases in measures of vitality, motility, and morphology. Their sperm also showed fewer chromosome abnormalities at the end of the 12 weeks than it did at the start of the study.

The control group, however, showed no such changes.

The researchers conclude that their:

"Findings demonstrated that walnuts added to a Western-style diet improved sperm vitality, motility and morphology."

Note that the study only looks at the effect of walnut consumption on semen quality in healthy young men: it doesn't show whether it would have the same effect in men with fertility problems, or whether the observed improvements in semen quality actually result in increased fertility.

Boon to fusion: New way to predict heat layer troublemaker

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Researchers at a recent worldwide conference on fusion power have confirmed the surprising accuracy of a new model for predicting the size of a key barrier to fusion that a top scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) has developed. The model could serve as a starting point for overcoming the barrier. "This allows you to depict the size of the challenge so you can think through what needs to be done to overcome it," said physicist Robert Goldston, the Princeton University professor of astrophysical sciences and former PPPL director who developed the model.

Goldston was among physicists who presented aspects of the model in late May to the 20th Annual International Conference on Plasma Surface Interactions in Aachen, Germany. Some 400 researchers from around the world attended the conference. Results of the model have been "eerily close" to the data, said Thomas Eich, a senior scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching, Germany, who gave an invited talk on his measurements. The agreement appears too close to have happened by chance, Eich added.

Goldston's model predicts the width of what physicists call the "scrape-off layer" in tokamaks, the most widely used fusion facilities. Such devices confine hot, electrically charged gas, or plasma, in powerful magnetic fields. But heat inevitably flows through the system and becomes separated, or scraped off, from the edge of the plasma and flows into an area called the divertor chamber.

The challenge is to prevent a thin and highly concentrated layer of heat from reaching and damaging the plate that sits at the bottom of the divertor chamber and absorbs the scrape-off flow. Such damage would halt fusion reactions, which take place when the atomic nuclei, or ions, inside the plasma merge and release energy. "If nothing was done and you took this right on the chin, it could be a knockout blow," said Goldston, who published his model in January in the journal Nuclear Fusion.

Solving this problem will be vital for future machines like ITER, the world's most powerful tokamak, which the European Union, the United States and five other countries are building in France to demonstrate fusion as a source of clean and abundant energy. The project is designed to produce 500 megawatts of fusion power in 400 second-long pulses, which will require researchers to spread the scrape-off heat as much as possible to protect the divertor plate.

Goldston's model could help guide such efforts. He began pondering the width of the heat flux during an international physics conference in South Korea in 2010. Looking at the latest scrape-off layer data based on improved measurements, he estimated -- literally on an envelope -- that the new widths could be produced without plasma turbulence, a factor that is typically considered but is notoriously difficult to calculate. This led him to search for a way to estimate the width of the surprisingly thin layer, and to gauge how the width would vary as conditions such as the amount of electrical current in the plasma varied.

The way plasma flows inside tokamaks provided the major clue. The ions within the charged gas gyrate swiftly along the magnetic field lines while drifting slowly across the lines. At the same time, the electrons also in the plasma travel very rapidly along the lines and carry away most of the heat. Goldston arrived at his prediction by determining how fast these subatomic particles flow into the divertor region, and how long it therefore takes them to reach it. The result "is what we call a 'heuristic' estimate, based on the key aspects of the physics, but not a detailed calculation," said Goldston.

His estimate confirmed what Goldston had suspected: the width of the scrape-off layer nearly matched the results of a calculation, made without considering turbulence, for determining how far the ions drift away from their field lines. "What's stunning is how closely the values correspond to the data, both in absolute value and in variation with the plasma current, magnetic field, machine size and input power," Goldston said. "This does not mean that turbulence plays no role, but it suggests that for the highest performance conditions, where turbulence is weakest, the motion of the ions is dominated by non-turbulent drift effects." This will be true in the case of ITER, he added, since it is designed to operate in high-performance conditions.

Researchers are developing techniques for widening the scrape-off layer. Such methods include pumping gas into the divertor region to keep some heat from reaching the plate. Physicists use deuterium, a form of hydrogen, to block the heat, and are injecting nitrogen to turn other parts of the heat into ultraviolet light. (While charged deuterium ions are already in the plasma, the deuterium gas that is injected into the divertor region to block the heat is not electrically charged.)

These strategies look promising. "We know that they will work," said Goldston. "The outstanding question is whether they will work completely enough" to mitigate the heat flux at ITER's highest power levels, without introducing so much gas that it cools the fuel. Physicists around the world are conducting experiments to understand the process better.

For Goldston, calculating the width of the scrape-off layer marks the latest research effort in a 40-year career at PPPL, which began when he was a graduate student. Along the way he helped to pioneer techniques for heating the plasma, and developed a widely used method called "Goldston scaling" for predicting how long heat is retained in a tokamak plasma.

"First, heat is injected into the plasma," Goldston said of how tokamaks operate. "Second, that heat is retained while much more heat is generated by fusion reactions. Finally, the resulting heat has to come out of the plasma. Without thinking about it, I have been following heat along this trajectory throughout my whole research career," he added. "We have made great progress on the first two steps, and now the most exciting challenge, to me, is the one that comes because of our success so far. Now we need to learn to handle the the outflow of heat from a high-power fusion energy source."
