CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The University of New Mexico earned its sixth-consecutive win on Saturday afternoon, a 2-1 victory over Auburn, before Texas A&M Corpus Christi ended the Lobos' streak with a 6-5 decision (8 inn.) in the second day of the 2013 Best Western Marina Grand Islander Classic hosted by the Islanders.

The Lobos (8-9) will face Kansas tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. MT. The Jayhawks are 10-3 overall and are 3-0 in this weekend's Classic. Kansas did drop a 1-0 decision to Texas A&M Corpus Christi in a pre-tournament contest on Thursday and then run-ruled the Islanders, 11-3, on Friday.

The Lobos handed Auburn its fourth loss of the season, leaning heavily on the arm of freshman pitcher Lauren Soles. In seven innings, the reigning Mountain West Pitcher of the Week allowed just three hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out eight. It's the most strikeouts of any UNM pitcher this season.

Offensively New Mexico had five hits, three of which came from junior Chelsea Anaya, who recorded a hit in every at-bat. The Lobos' second baseman hit a solo home run to center in the bottom of the fifth inning to give UNM a 2-0 lead.

Designated player Courtney Geith and left fielder Sheryl Guillermo?recorded the other two hits for UNM in the win.

"Lauren threw a great game against Auburn," head coach Erica Beach said. "She fought hard on the mound all game.

"It was important for us to get that close win. It was a good game from both teams and felt great to pull out the victory.:

The Lobos' second game of the day was a back-and-forth contest that extended into an eighth inning. The game was tied at 5 after 7 1/2 innings and the Islanders were able to load the bases and bring the winning run in off a fielder's choice. Texas A&M Corpus Christi improved to 4-10 overall with the walk-off win.

New Mexico outhit the Islanders, 14-9, and was error-free in the field, but couldn't come away with the win.

Freshman Mariah Rimmer?led UNM with three hits, two runs scored and one stolen base. Anaya had a team-high three RBIs on one hit.

Sophomore Carrie Sheehan?got the start and tossed the first five innings. She faced 27 batters, scattering eight hits and allowing four earned runs while walking two and striking out three.

Freshman Lisa Rodrigues?came in on a relief effort with no outs accounted for in the bottom of the sixth and the score tied at 2-2. Rodrigues threw 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit -- a three-run homer -- and one earned run while walking three and striking out one.

"Game two was back and forth and our team fought hard and rallied when our backs were against the wall," Beach said. "We didn't pull it off in the end, but I loved our tenacity."

New Mexico 2, Auburn 1

The Lobos were the first team on the board, getting two runners on and capitalizing on an error by the Tigers' pitcher in the bottom of the second inning to put up a run.

New Mexico made it 2-0 with a two-out solo home run by Anaya in the fifth frame.

Auburn got two hits in the top of the sixth inning, including an RBI single to left field by Brooke Lathan, to make the score 2-1.New Mexico had runners on first and third with two outs away in the bottom of the inning, but Auburn's pitching came through with a strikeout to keep it at 2-1 heading into the final frame.

It was three-up, three-down for the Tigers in their final at-bat in the top of the seventh and New Mexico took the contest, 2-1.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi 6, Lobos 5

The Islanders got two hits, drew a walk and a hit-by-pitch to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

New Mexico got back-to-back hits from Jordan Sjostrand and Rimmer in the top of the third. An error by the Islanders' shortstop loaded the bases and a fielder's choice by Anaya brought in Amber Tracy?(pinch ran for Sjostrand). As Anaya went to steal second base, Rimmer ran home and gave UNM a 2-1 lead.

Texas A&M CC responded in the bottom of the fourth, using two hits to put up one run and tie the contest at 2-2.

The Islanders had a big inning in the bottom of the sixth as their first two batters reached on singles to right field and advanced to third and second base on the throw in. New Mexico had Rodrigues come in as relief between batters, but the Islanders' Cochran cranked a homer to right field, scoring three runs and giving the home team a 5-2 advantage after six frames.

New Mexico didn't give up, however, and pounded out six hits in a three-run rally to match their opponent in the top of the seventh.

Sjostrand led off with a single to center field and advanced off another single to center field by Rimmer. A ground out to the short stop by Kaity Ingram allowed both runners to move one base. Anaya followed and drove in Sjostrand and Rimmer off a single up the middle. She then advanced to second off a single by Naomi Tellez and moved to third off a single by Cassandra Kalapsa. Anaya reached home by a single to third base by Guillermo?and the Lobos tied the contest at 5 all in the top of the final frame.

Texas A&M's lead off drew a walk in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lobos' defense held her at first base and the score remained 5-5 after seven innings.

The international tie breaker rule came into play, meaning at each half inning, the offensive team begins its turn at bat with its last out placed on second base.

Jordyn Bledsoe?took her spot at second base in the top of the eighth, and advanced to third on a pop up to the pitcher by Rimmer. But UNM was unable to bring her around.

The Islanders managed to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth with one out and a fielder's choice allowed the winning run to score and end the game, 6-5.
