A gauge of planned U.S. business spending increased by the most in just over a year in January and new orders for long-lasting manufactured goods excluding transportation rose solidly, pointing to underlying strength in factory activity.
The Commerce Department said on Wednesday non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for business spending plans, jumped 6.3 percent, the biggest gain since December 2011, after slipping 0.3 percent in December.
Economists had expected this category to only rise 0.2 percent.
Durable goods orders excluding transportation increased 1.9 percent, the largest gain since December 2011, after increasing 1 percent in December. That was well above economists' expectations for a 0.2 percent gain.
However, overall orders for durable goods - items from toasters to aircraft that are meant to last at least three years - tumbled 5.2 percent as demand for civilian and defense aircraft fell sharply. Last month's drop was the first since August.
The strong rise in so-called core capital goods should bolster expectations for business spending on equipment and software to remain on an upward trend this quarter.
Still, the report is unlikely to change the Federal Reserve's very easy monetary policy stance.
Factory activity has cooled in recent months after helping to lift the economy from the 2007-09 recession. Sluggish domestic demand, tighter fiscal policy and slowing global growth are holding back manufacturing.
Last month, shipments of non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, used to calculate equipment and software spending in the gross domestic product report, fell 1 percent after being flat the prior month.

Lifetime pet insurance coverage will help ensure that these hero dogs will receive the best veterinary treatment available if they become sick or injured.
Seattle, Wash. (PRWEB) February 27, 2013
Trupanion, a trusted pet brand and proven industry leader in pet insurance, today announced they have become the sole provider of pet insurance for the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards category winners for 2011 and 2012. These winning dogs will receive coverage for 90 percent of the cost of treating injuries and illnesses they may develop throughout their lifetime.?We are thrilled that our hero dogs will be insured for the rest of their lives, allowing them the opportunity for long-term health and happiness, while easing the burden of financial care for their guardians,? said Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane Association. ?Trupanion offers a comprehensive and simple policy that we feel is a perfect choice for our hero dogs and their guardians.?

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Las Vegas triple murder suspect Ammar Harris has a smirk on his face in a ninety-second YouTube video that shows him flashing a thick stack of $100 bills.
The video provided by police is just one of many online displays of bravado that suggest a sinister side to Harris. The 26-year-old is the subject of a multi-state manhunt after a Maserati driver was shot dead on the Las Vegas Strip last Thursday and a taxi driver and passenger died in the fiery chain reaction crash that followed.
Wearing a red baseball cap and crisp white shirt with flashy sunglasses tucked in the collar, Harris asks nonchalantly whether viewers will "help me count something," and then fans out a stack of bills.
The video he took of himself in a bathroom cuts away to a pile of cash on the counter; Harris drops a bill and says "fifty."
"I could keep going, I could keep going ... but like, I don't feel like countin' anymore," he says. "I got another bag. But I think I proved my (expletive) point."
Las Vegas Police Officer Bill Cassell declined to comment on the video, saying it was open to the interpretation of individual viewers. But he said detectives are getting plenty of leads on Harris, whose face is splashed across billboards along Las Vegas freeways.
"I'm sure the widespread publicity, as well as the blatant, heinous nature of the crime, is motivating people to contact us," Cassell said.
Authorities believe Harris shot from a Range Rover he was riding in along with Tineesha Lashun Howard, a 22-year-old from Miami who has been arrested multiple times on charges including prostitution, trespassing, possession of a stolen vehicle and grand larceny. Police have named Howard, who also goes by the name Yenesis "Yeni" Alfonzo, a person of interest in the case.
Harris was arrested last year in Las Vegas in a 2010 prostitution case using the name Ammar Asim Faruq Harris. He was charged with robbery, sexual assault, kidnapping and coercion with a weapon, and police sought charges of pandering by force and felon in possession of concealed weapon. Court records show that case was dismissed last June.
But while the courts haven't convicted him of pimping, his bold social media persona suggests otherwise.
In Twitter postings attributed to Harris and reviewed by the Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://bit.ly/ZzEO2i ) before the feed was apparently disabled Tuesday, Harris brags that his house is full of women, and they're all paying him. In one August post quoted by the newspaper, he writes, "there's nothing wrong with paying for (sex)...as long as you paying one of my (women)."
Harris posts pictures of a Bentley and an Aston Martin, and mug shots from his own arrests. Harris was convicted in South Carolina in 2004 of felony possession with intent to sell a stolen pistol and convicted in Atlanta of a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge.
Harris also discusses plans for his own birthday party aboard a boat on the Atlantic Ocean, complete with a $1,000 bikini contest.
The fast life Harris boasts of is not unlike the online persona projected by 27-year-old shooting victim Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr.
Cherry, who went by the stage name "Kenny Clutch," is seen in a YouTube video driving his luxury car down the Strip and rapping about a "Maserati, paid 120 for it."
Police say the two argued in the valet area of the Aria casino before dawn Thursday. The dispute took a deadly turn in the tourist corridor when shots were fired from a Range Rover and into Cherry's Maserati, which sped forward through a red light and slammed into a taxi.
The taxi exploded, killing 62-year-old driver Michael Boldon and 48-year-old passenger Sandra Sutton-Wasmund, a businesswoman visiting from Maple Valley, Wash. Four other cars crashed, injuring several other people and closing the intersection in the heart of Las Vegas for an entire day.
Police found the Range Rover two days later parked at the gated Las Vegas apartment complex where Harris lived, but there was no sign of Harris.

ALMATY (Reuters) - Major powers offered Iran limited sanctions relief in return for a halt to the most controversial part of its atomic work during the first day of nuclear talks on Tuesday, and Iran promised to respond with a proposal on the same scale.
The talks in Kazakhstan were the first in eight months between Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany - the "P5+1" - on a decade-old dispute that threatens to trigger another war in the Middle East.
Iran has used the time since the last meeting in June to further expand activity that the West suspects is aimed at enabling it to build a nuclear bomb, something that Israel has suggested it will prevent by force if diplomacy fails.
The two-day negotiations in the city of Almaty follow inconclusive meetings last year in Istanbul, Baghdad and Moscow.
Western diplomats described the first day of talks as "useful" but said Iranian negotiators did not immediately respond to the P5+1's demand that Tehran closes its underground nuclear facility Fordow, at the center of their concerns.
"Hopefully the Iranians will be able to reflect overnight and will come back and view our proposal positively," said a spokesman for European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton who oversees Iranian diplomacy for the six powers.
With the Islamic Republic's political elite preoccupied with worsening infighting before a presidential election in June, few believe the meeting will yield a quick breakthrough.
"It is clear that nobody expects to come from Almaty with a fully done deal," the EU spokesman, Michael Mann, said before the meeting started.
OFFER PRESENTED
A U.S. official said that the offer - an updated version of one rejected by Tehran last year - would take into account its recent nuclear advances, but also take "some steps in the sanctions arena".
For years, the powers had attempted a mix of economic pressure and diplomacy to persuade Iran to scale back its atomic work, but Tehran has insisted that sanctions are lifted before it complies with any demands.
In Almaty, a source close to the Iranian negotiators told reporters: "Depending on what proposal we receive from the other side we will present our own proposal of the same weight. The continuation of talks depends on how this exchange of proposals goes forward".
At best, diplomats and analysts say, Iran will take the joint offer from the United States, Russia, France, Germany, Britain and China seriously and agree to hold further talks soon on practical steps to ease the tension. Initial meetings could involve only technical experts, who cannot strike deals.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in Berlin that he hoped Iran "will make its choice to move down the path of a diplomatic solution".
But Iran, whose chief negotiator Saeed Jalili is close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and is a veteran of Iran's 1980s war against Iraq and the Western powers that backed it, has shown no sign of willingness to scale back its nuclear work.
It says it has a sovereign right to carry out nuclear enrichment for peaceful energy purposes, and in particular refuses to close the underground Fordow enrichment plant, a condition the powers have set for any sanctions relief.
FASTER ENRICHMENT
A U.N. nuclear watchdog report last week said Iran was for the first time installing advanced centrifuges that would allow it to significantly speed up its enrichment of uranium, which can have both civilian and military purposes.
Accelerating Western sanctions on Iran over the last 14 months are hurting Iran's economy and slashing oil revenue. Its currency has more than halved in value, which in turn has pushed up inflation.
The central bank governor was quoted on Monday as saying Iran's inflation was likely to top 30 percent in coming weeks as the sanctions contribute to shortages and stockpiling. [ID:nL6N0BP51A] Iranians say inflation is already much higher than that official figure.
But analysts say the sanctions are not close to having the crippling effect envisaged by Washington and - so far at least - they have not prompted a change in Iran's nuclear course.
Western officials said the powers' offer would include an easing of restrictions on trade in gold and other precious metals if Tehran closes Fordow.
The facility is used for enriching uranium to 20 percent fissile purity, a short technical step from weapons grade.
Western officials acknowledge an easing of U.S. and EU sanctions on trade in gold represents a relatively modest step. But the metal could be used as part of barter transactions that might allow Iran to circumvent financial sanctions.
Iran's foreign ministry spokesman last week dismissed the reported incentive as insufficient and a senior Iranian lawmaker has ruled out closing Fordow, close to the holy city of Qom.

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Firefighters put their lives on the line in some of the most dangerous conditions on Earth. One of their greatest challenges, however, is seeing through thick veils of smoke and walls of flame to find people in need of rescue. A team of Italian researchers has developed a new imaging technique that uses infrared (IR) digital holography to peer through chaotic conflagrations and capture potentially lifesaving and otherwise hidden details.
The team describes its breakthrough results and their applications in a paper published February 26 in the Optical Society's (OSA) open-access journal Optics Express.
Firefighters can see through smoke using current IR camera technology. However, such instruments are blinded by the intense infrared radiation emitted by flames, which overwhelm the sensitive detectors and limit their use in the field. By employing a specialized lens-free technique, the researchers have created a system that is able to cope with the flood of radiation from an environment filled with flames as well as smoke.
"IR cameras cannot 'see' objects or humans behind flames because of the need for a zoom lens that concentrates the rays on the sensor to form the image," says Pietro Ferraro of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) Istituto Nazionale di Ottica in Italy. By eliminating the need for the zoom lens, the new technique avoids this drawback.
"It became clear to us that we had in our hands a technology that could be exploited by emergency responders and firefighters at a fire scene to see through smoke without being blinded by flames, a limitation of existing technology," Ferraro says. "Perhaps most importantly, we demonstrated for the first time that a holographic recording of a live person can be achieved even while the body is moving."
Holography is a means of producing a 3-D image of an object. To create a hologram, such as those typically seen on credit cards, a laser beam is split into two (an object beam and a reference beam). The object beam is shone onto the object being imaged. When the reflected object beam and the reference beam are recombined, they create an interference pattern that encodes the 3-D image.
In the researchers' new imaging system, a beam of infrared laser light is widely dispersed throughout a room. Unlike visible light, which cannot penetrate thick smoke and flames, the IR rays pass through largely unhindered. The IR light does, however, reflect off of any objects or people in the room, and the information carried by this reflected light is recorded by a holographic imager. It is then decoded to reveal the objects beyond the smoke and flames. The result is a live, 3-D movie of the room and its contents.
The next step in moving this technology to the field is to develop a portable tripod-based system that houses both the laser source and the IR camera. The systems may also be suitable for fixed installation inside buildings or tunnels. In addition, the team is exploring other applications, most notably in the biomedical field for non-destructive testing of large aerospace composite structures.
"Besides life-saving applications in fire and rescue, the potential to record dynamic scenes of a human body could have a variety of other biomedical uses including studying or monitoring breathing, cardiac beat detection and analysis, or measurement of body deformation due to various stresses during exercise," Ferraro says. "We are excited to further develop this technology and realize its application for saving and improving human life."

Within the past year or two, performance-minded hatchbacks blew up in the U.S. The Fiat 500's American introduction served as a quasi-litmus test for the segment as a whole, and now even GM and Ford have brought their own souped-up subcompacts stateside.
But the progenitor of all this hot hatch hullabaloo in the U.S is the one against which all others are measured: the 1983 VW Rabbit GTI. And ahead of the Geneva Motor Show, today Volkswagen released the vitals on the next generation of its high-performance hatch: the 2014 Golf GTI Mk VII.
The 2014 features an upgraded version of the Audi-engineered EA888 2.0-liter turbo-four engine found in the every VW since 2008, with a welcome bump in power. The new GTI puts out 220 hp, up 20 from the last-gen GTI, and 230 with an optional performance pack. The 258 lb-ft of torque is available at a surprising 1500 rpm and totals an increase of 57 over the last generation. The GTI has never been faster off the line (excluding the one-off W12 and R models) than it is now, dealing with 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds, 0.3 faster than last year's model. It will go on on to hit 153 mph.?In addition to being quicker, the GTI is more efficient, based on European standards it gets an estimated 39.2 combined mpg (though that number will probably be lower with EPA testing). That's a feat achieved in part by shedding nearly 60 pounds.
Styling-wise, the MK VII GTI is almost identical to the new Golf GTD announced last week. The only differences are the GTI's iconic red stripe across the grille, "Clark" tartan-patterned seats, its 17-inch "Brooklyn" alloys, and a GTI-braded "sport" steering wheel, shifter knob, instrument cluster, and other interior accents.
However, it's important to note that the performance figures are for the European version. While the U.S.-bound GTI should be identical in appearance?with even more standard equipment?the two cars may differ slightly in engine power due to fuel differences between the continents. For reference, this year's 2013 GTI is slightly more powerful (7 hp) than its American counterpart. In addition, it's still up in the air if options like the performance pack?including a horsepower boost and a mechanical limited-slip differential?and summer tires, which are standard overseas, will be open to American buyers.
Europeans will get their hands on the 2014 GTI this May, to the tune of 28,350 Euros. We get to wait until next year here in the States. No word on price yet, but one thing is for certain: The new GTI is a step up in every way.

Over the course of a single school week, the Catlin Gabel community hosted the visual artist Lucinda Parker, the screenwriter Gil Dennis, and the Jean Vollum Distinguished Writer Samiya Bashir.
Parker visited the school on February 4, and met with members of Ginia King?s Creative Writing class and student artists invited by Dale Rawls. In her presentation, Parker pointed out the several ways she combines text and image in her artwork. She has used her teaching experienced to take a leading role in the Word and Hand project, which is a collaboration between Wilsonville High School and Catlin Gabel. In this project, one visual artist from either school exchanges work with a student poet at the partnering school. This partnership will continue throughout the year, with each artist responding to his or her partner?s work.

Parker also described her personal experience as an artist. She focused on the later part of her career, including her commissioned paintings for government buildings and private businesses. She tends to create abstract landscapes that highlight the contrast between natural and manmade elements. Her paintings are often large scale with an element of technical movement on the site of the installation.
After her slideshow, Parker volunteered more of her time to take individual questions from students. In this Q&A session, she discussed how to handle the long distance and atypical relationship between the poet and the artist in the Word and Hand project.
As a piece of general advice to all artists, she noted that, ?it?s a free country ? you can do anything you want when you paint ? you can take inspiration from all parts of your life.?
On February 5, Dennis (a screenwriter for Walk The Line) visited Ginia King?s Creative Writing classes. Dennis reflected on how his personal creative process fit within the conventions of screenwriting. He related this to how he created the ?character? of June Carter-Cash and Johnny Cash. He also spoke about how he interviewed Johnny Cash as he was working on the script.
In his interviews, he focused on five questions: 1) What was the angriest someone got at you? 2) What was your most terrifying moment? 3) What was your moment of the greatest shame? 4) What is your saddest moment? 5) What is your proudest moment? These questions helped Dennis create the backstory for all of the characters in the script, both historical and fictional.
Dennis also showed some of his own work and spoke to how it fit the commercial creative process. He showed how a single script went through the revision process as executives gave him advice to make it more marketable. This sometimes called for total rewrites.
Gil Dennis after workshopping with a Creative Writing class (Photo: Kenneth Woods)
He also discussed his creation of characters based on autofiction (changing elements of one?s real life and appropriating them to a fictional scenario). Dennis wrote down moments from his own life on flashcards. Next, he assigned them to different characters to create their backstory. Dennis returned to Catlin on February 26 to help students with their individual screenwriting projects.
On February 7, Distinguished Writer Samiya Bashir visited Ginia King?s 6th Block Creative Writing class.
Upon entering, Bashir made an effort to learn the name of everyone in the classroom. Using her skills as a professor of creative writing at Reed College, she then facilitated a workshop that explored how beauty is depicted in poetry.
The class began with an exercise where the students wrote about what they thought the phrase ?she is beautiful? meant. After hearing what we had to say, she concluded, ?beauty is about opposites.?
The class then transitioned into groups and worked on a piece together. Bashir encouraged the groups to ?write as if your life depended on it ? [a poem] can change your life simply by helping you reconsider life.? Her prompts, such as writing a poem in which every line begins with the word ?yes,? challenged the students. Bashir even offered to help workshop these poems after she left the school.
Bashir gave a reading to the entire Upper School during assembly. She reflected on how each poem that she read mirrored aspects of her own life, such as learning physics from her father, or her love of Star Trek. Bashir used her ?theatrical background? to read her poems, and used Shatner-esque dramatic pauses and vocal expressiveness.
During the Q&A session she spoke about her creative process. With three minutes remaining, Valerie Ding ?15 asked about the meaning of life. Bashir first answered 42 (a reference to Douglas?s Hitchhiker?s Guide To The Galaxy), which was met with by applause and laughter from students and faculty. She concluded with the statement that one should live for themselves and be happy.
Between Parker, Dennis, and Bashir, the student body received enlightening tutoring on the creation of art as well as valuable life advice.

We've already seen Dell's XPS 10 Windows RT slate torn open for an FCC-certified peek at its internals, but here it is in the filings again with an extra bonus: cellular connectivity. Thanks to its Snapdragon S4 CPU it was already LTE ready and this J42A tags on a W to its part number, packing LTE equipment for bands 4 and 17 which are compatible with AT&T's network. Dell originally mentioned an HSPA+/LTE model would appear after the WiFi version launched and that day is likely close at hand -- a good thing, if you're waiting for an alternative to the Tegra 3-powered ASUS VivoTab RT with LTE.

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Glioblastoma, the most common and lethal form of brain tumor in adults, is challenging to treat because the tumors rapidly become resistant to therapy. As cancer researchers are learning more about the causes of tumor cell growth and drug resistance, they are discovering molecular pathways that might lead to new targeted therapies to potentially treat this deadly cancer.
Scientists at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in San Diego worked collaboratively across the laboratories of Drs. Paul Mischel, Web Cavenee and Frank Furnari to investigate one such molecular pathway called the mammalian target of rapamycin or mTOR. This signaling pathway is hyperactivated in close to 90 percent of glioblastomas and plays a critical role in regulating tumor growth and survival. Therapies that inhibit mTOR signaling are under investigation as drug development targets, but results to date have been disappointing: mTOR inhibitors halt the growth, but fail to kill the tumor cells.
A study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences uncovers an unexpected, but important molecular mechanism of mTOR inhibitor resistance and identifies a novel drug combination that reverses this resistance.
The story begins with a closer look at a gene-encoded protein called promyleocytic leukemia gene or PML. The study investigators explored the role of PML in causing resistance to mTOR inhibitor treatment. They found that when glioblastoma patients are treated with drugs that target the mTOR pathway, the levels of PML rise dramatically. Further, they showed that PML upregulation made the tumor cells resistant to mTOR inhibitors, and that if they suppressed the ability of the tumor cells to upregulate the PML protein, the tumor cells died in response to the mTOR inhibitor therapy.
"When we looked at cells in in vivo models and patients treated in the clinic, it became clear that the glioblastoma cells massively regulated PML enabling them to escape the effects of mTOR inhibitor therapy," reported senior author Paul Mischel, MD, Ludwig Institute member based at the University of California at San Diego.
"Our team hypothesized that if we could use a pharmacological approach to get rid of PML and combine it with an mTOR inhibitor, it could change the response from halting growth to cell death. The question was how?" added Mischel.
Previous research had shown that the use of low-dose arsenic could cause degradation of the PML protein in patients with leukemia. The team hypothesized that if arsenic could degrade PML, it may reverse resistance to mTOR inhibitors. The combination of mTOR and low-dose arsenic in mice indeed showed a synergistic effect, with massive tumor cell death along with very significant shrinkage of the tumor in mice with no ill side effects.
"Current therapy upregulates PML, turning off the mTOR signaling pathway. The tumor cells hide, waiting for the target signal to return," said Mischel. "When low-dose arsenic is added, not only does it stop the cell from returning, it shuts down the escape route killing the tumor cell."
These results present the first clinical evidence that mTOR inhibition promotes PML upregulation in mice and patients, and that it mediates drug resistance. The clinical relevance was confirmed when researchers looked at before- and after-treatment tissue samples from patients treated with mTOR inhibitors, confirming that PML goes up significantly in post treatment of mTOR inhibitors.
"These data suggest a new approach for potential treatment of glioblastoma," said Mischel. "We are moving forward to test that possibility in people."
Post-doctoral students Akio Iwanami and Beatrice Gini from the Mischel lab, as well as Ciro Zanca from the Furnari/Cavenee lab also contributed significantly to this paper.

>>> welcome back. a group of bipartisan lawmakers just returned from a fact finding mission inside mali 's deadly war zone . the four americans met with military officials in the country's capital and discussed how the u.s. can help mali regain control from islamic rebels. french troopses are involved in what officials call quote very violent fighting in the northern part of the country. joining me now, two politicians of the delegation, senator chris coons and karen bass of california. thank you both for joining us.
>> thank you, tamron.
>> absolutely. senator, on your trip, you were quoted saying the u.s. likely to eventually resume direct support of mali 's military but only after democracy through elections. you have americans wondering why to supply direct military support and why was it so important to go there?
>> it was responsibility for the delegation to go there to meet with the american ambassador and meet with the military commanders who are both leading the multilateral african force. we met with the major general of nigeria and with the minister of defense from mali and his leadership. and with the french military commander and to get a briefing from our own diplomatic and intelligence community about the situation on the ground and to have a chance to question the french, the malian and military commanders about how they saw the path forward. we had a chance to meet with some of the folks who fled from the north and seeking shelter in the south and to hear from them personally about what circumstances were like in timbuktu and some of the northern cities where they have suffered under jihadist rule over nine to ten months.
>> congresswoman, this is an example where we as americans must keep our eye on the ball, for example, in mali . we saw what happened in somalia and yemen, as well, where groups linked to al qaeda or jihadists infiltrate and potentially be a threat to this country.
>> absolutely. and i have to say that another meeting we had that was very critical was with the interim president. but you know, if you look at the situation in many of these countries, until you address the underlying social and economic conditions, especially with very young populations, when you have tens of thousands of young people who are unemployed and they feel as though they have no hope and no future, then they're perfectly susceptible to al qaeda or other problematic groups like that so i think it's important to contribute. we are continuing to contribute humanitarian aid and we need to support the malians preparing for elections in july and make sure that they have good gompb na governance and address the underlying problems that --
>> we know that people will hear the comments and say, wait a minute, we are in the middle of the sequester debate and talking about cuts to defense, cuts to the department of justice . domestic programs here. and we're looking at assisting this country. why is it important?
>> well, i think it's very important to stability and to our national security here. but you know, having said that, there's no reason for us to have the sequester. this is a self-imposed problem and i think the congress both sides of the aisle need to come together and the republicans in my house i think want to see the sequester move forward because they have a problem and their belief as to the size of government should be and they're not recognizing the tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of jobs that will be lost if the sequester moves forward.
>> senator, as i mentioned, we are in the middle of the stalemate. no meetings planned here and talking about assisting another country and certainly you can point to the threat that it could pose if things get out of hand in mali but you have folks looking at potential job loss here and may wonder where the priorities lie.
>> tamron, i think part of why it was important to go and visit mali and see conditions on the ground was to further understand how how real and significant a threat al qaeda and the islamic iqim poses to mali and the countries in the region. three americans were killed in algeria just a few weeks ago in a terrorist-led kidnapping and attack on a gas facility in the desert and the same folk who is led the attack on the benghazi component linked remotely to the folks taking action in northern mali and just this week, the french military seized i think 35,000 tons of libyan arms that had been relocated to the deserts in the north of mali . this is an area the size of texas and al qaeda affiliates seeking to use it as a new base from which to launch attacks on french, american interests and regional african allies. yes, facing the sequester, facing record deficits we have financial challenges of our own in this country but in this particular situation where our allies are doing the fighting, and where the hard work of reconciliation and a restoration of democracy is possible, it's wise to contribute and support the efforts by the french, by the malians and rexal african forces taking the fight to al qaeda .
>> thank you both for your time and we greatly appreciate you joining us from this big trip you have made.

Don't hold back on the olive oil, a Spanish study concludes.

A careful test of the so-called Mediterranean diet involving more than 7,000 people at a high risk of having heart attacks and strokes found the diet reduced them when compared with a low-fat diet. A regular diet of Mediterranean cuisine also reduced the risk of dying.
The findings, published online by The New England Journal of Medicine, come from a study conducted right in the heart of Mediterranean country: Spain.
A group of men and women, ages 55 to 80 at the start of the study, were randomly assigned to a low-fat diet or one of two variations of the Mediterranean diet: one featuring a lot of extra-virgin olive oil (more than a quarter cup a day) and the other including lots of nuts (more than an ounce a day of walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts).
The Mediterranean diet is rich in fish, grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables. The diet is low in dairy products, red meat and processed foods.
In this study, funded mainly by the Spanish government, the researchers made sure people got regular training sessions in the particulars of each diet. They also checked people's actual consumption of olive oil and nuts with lab tests.
One thing the researchers didn't do was set any limits on calories or targets for exercise.
While lots of research has found benefits from the Mediterranean diet, many of the studies have observed what people have eaten and looked for associations. One of this study's strengths is that it randomly assigned people at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease to diets that stood to help them.
The study was stopped early (after a median follow-up of 4.8 years) because the benefits from the Mediterranean diet were already becoming apparent. Overall, the people consuming the diets rich in olive oil or nuts had about a 30 percent lower risk of having a heart attack, stroke or dying from a cardiovascular cause.
In absolute terms, there were about 8 of those problems for every 1,000 person-years in the Mediterranean diet groups compared with 11 per 1,000 person-years in the low-fat diet group.
How does the Mediterranean diet work? The prevailing theory is that it lowers bad cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing protective good cholesterol. It may also also help the body's ability to process sugar.

We're back, once again, for Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. This is my fourth year here. And like previous years, this one appears poised to present its own challenges as well as opportunities to showcase new tech.
On one had it's easy to look at the schedule, what we know is coming -- and what we think we know is coming -- and shrug it off. HTC, usually the highlight (or at least one of them) at MWC, has already announced its flagship for 2013 in the HTC One. Samsung's not expected to do the Galaxy S4 for a few more weeks, though it did already drop the Galaxy Note 8.0 on us. (And it did so on a day usually reserved for travel and/or accidentally leaking devices on the sides of buildings.)
So what's left to look forward to? LG's going to roll out a slew of new devices. ASUS always brings something interesting. And I'm curious to see where things stand with Mozilla and its Firefox OS, which we've played with before. Ubuntu may get the nerd credit, but it's Mozilla that's set to have the first dedicated hardware. It's not Android, specifically, but it's set to take on Android in emerging markets. So my interest is piqued.
Plus, Mobile World Congress moved to a new venue this year. I'll sorely miss the view of the Fira de Barcelona, with the towers at the entrance and the castle looking down from the hill. But the Gran Fira (just a train change and another stop down the road) promises better logistics, we're told, and is a much newer, more modern venue. So we'll see if that makes up for whatever majesty is lost.
And the food. Oh, the food and wine in Barcelona. If you can ever get the chance to come here and gorge on tapas for a few nights, I highly recommend it.

Pope Benedict XVI's leads the Angelus prayer from the window of his apartments on Sunday in the Vatican. The pontiff celebrates his last Angelus prayer at the end of a week-long spiritual retreat, ahead of his resignation on Thursday.
By Frances D'Emilio, The Associated Press
VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI gave his pontificate's final Sunday blessing from his studio window to the cheers of tens of thousands of people packing St. Peter's Square, but sought to reassure the faithful that he wasn't abandoning the church by retiring to spend his final years in prayer.
The 85-year-old Benedict is stepping down on Thursday evening, the first pope to do so in 600 years, after saying he no longer has the mental or physical strength to lead the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.?
But while he has lately looked tired and frail, the crowd filling the cobblestone square seemed to energize him, and he spoke in a clear, strong voice, repeatedly thanking the faithful for their closeness and affection as they interrupted him, again and again, with applause and cheers. Police estimated some 100,000 people turned out.?
Benedict told the crowd that God is calling him to dedicate himself "even more to prayer and meditation," which he will do in a secluded monastery being renovated for him on the grounds behind Vatican City's ancient walls.?
As cardinals gather for the election of a new pope, the Vatican was sharply critical of a wave of reports in the Italian media. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.
"But this doesn't mean abandoning the church," he said, as many in the crowd looked sad at his departure from regular view. "On the contrary, if God asks me, this is because I can continue to serve it (the church) with the same dedication and the same love which I have tried to do so until now, but in a way more suitable to my age and to my strength."?
The phrase "tried to" was the pope's adlibbed addition to his prepared text.?
Benedict has one more public appearance, a Wednesday general audience in St. Peter's Square.?
Benedict smiled at the crowd after an aide parted the white curtain at his window, telling the people, "thank you for your affection."?
Heavy rain had been forecast for Rome, and some drizzle dampened the square earlier in the morning. But when Benedict appeared, to the peal of church bells as the clock struck noon, blue sky crept through the clouds.?
"We thank God for the sun he has given us," the pope said, sounding cheerful.?
As cheers continued in the crowd, the pontiff simply turned away from the window and stepped back down into apartment, which he will leave on Thursday, taking a helicopter to the Vatican summer residence in the hills outside Rome while he waits for the monastery to be ready.?
A child in the crowd held up a sign on a yellow placard, written in Italian, "You are not alone, I'm with you." Other admirers held homemade signs, saying "Grazie."?
No date has yet been set for the start of the conclave of cardinals, who will vote in secret to elect Benedict's successor.?
One Italian in the crowd seemed to be doing a little campaigning, hoisting a sign which mentioned the name of two Italian cardinals considered by observers to be potential contenders in the selection of the next pontiff.?
Flags in the crowd represented many nations, with a large number from Brazil.?
The cardinals in the conclave will have to decide whether it's time to look outside of Europe for a pope.

In a motion filed Feb. 18, attorneys for SourceGas and its partner, Rocky Mountain Natural Gas, argued that the foundation of CMC's case is not supported by the facts, and asked District Judge James Boyd to deny a CMC motion for summary judgment, or dismissal.
The case currently is set for trial starting June 26.
At issue is last year's decision by the CMC board of trustees to declare invalid a lease for roughly five acres of college property.
The lease, arranged by former CMC president Stan Jensen and his staff, was to allow SourceGas to build a compressor station along a natural gas line that crosses college property.
The company says the compressor station is needed to maintain the correct pressure on natural gas supplies headed for the Eagle Valley.
After public opposition to the compressor station erupted last year, the college trustees decided the lease was not valid because they had not made a formal ?finding? that the land was appropriate for leasing and was not ?immediately needed? for college purposes, as provided under state law.
District Judge Boyd ruled last August that, because the college is a ?public entity? under state law, he could not force the college to allow the compressor station to be built.
But he did not rule that the lease itself was void, and the trial now is based primarily on the question of whether monetary damages are due to SourceGas for expenses incurred in engineering and planning for the compressor station.
In the Feb. 18 motion, SourceGas and its partner, Rocky Mountain Natural Gas, argued that the trustees had delegated authority to negotiate leases to Jensen, and that Jensen had passed that authority on to his staff.
That, the company maintains, made the lease valid, prompting SourceGas to spend considerable amounts of money on engineering and planning for the compressor station.
According to the motion, Jensen informed the board at a board retreat in May 2011 that SourceGas had proposed building the compressor station on college property.
Jensen, at that meeting, described the terms of a lease being negotiated with SourceGas, and got the board's permission to proceed with the negotiations, according to the motion.
The motion cited statements by Jensen, current CMC board president Glenn Davis and former CMC board president Stanley Orr in support of the company's arguments against dismissal of the case.
Given this evidence, the SourceGas motion continues, the judge should deny CMC's attempt to have the case dismissed, and should instead let it proceed to trial.
The CMC response to the SourceGas motion had not yet been filed on Feb. 22.
