Martin Solveig At Movie Awards: What Did He Play?

We break down highlights from French DJ's movie-themed set.

"The Hunger Games" was one of the big winners Sunday night (June 3) at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, where the juggernaut collected several Golden Popcorns against a musical backdrop culled from some of the most iconic film scores of all time. That nostalgia-inducing soundscape came courtesy of DJ Martin Solveig, who remixed themes from classic movies ranging from "Star Wars" to "Pulp Fiction."

The Black Keys, Fun. and Wiz Khalifa all brought the house down as musical guests at the MTV Movie Awards, held at the Gibson Ampitheatre in Universal City, California. The French electronic-music DJ and producer entertained the audience throughout the show, which was broadcast to viewers live as the show went in and out of commercial breaks.

Solveig carefully curated a delicious mixture of some of the most memorable melodies from the movies that have shaped generations of popular culture with their stories, performances, tone and dialog. His set was also as much about the present as the past, perfectly summarized by the mix of the Doors and screamo singer-turned-Grammy-winning dubstep standard-bearer Skrillex.

Solveig's selections on Sunday included "Hello" (Martin Solveig featuring Dragonette), Calvin Harris' "Feel So Close," Skrillex and the Doors "Breakin' a Sweat," Kavinsky + Lovefoxx's "Nightcall" (from the movie "Drive"), "Ready 2 Go (Hardwell Remix)," "Misirlou"(made famous all over again in "Pulp Fiction"), Martin Solveig & Dragonette feat. Idoling!!!'s "Big in Japan (Ziggy Stardust Remix)," various mixes of "The Night Out" and some of Daft Punk's work from "Tron: Legacy."

And these were the tracks spinning off from the most legendary themes:

"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)": Clint Eastwood's "Man With No Name" spaghetti Western trilogy (which concluded with 1966's "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly") is the stuff of legend, most recently memorialized in Johnny Depp's animated "Rango." For many years, Metallica has opened each and every concert with composer Ennio Morricone's "Ecstasy of Gold" from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," with the crowd often singing the lyric-less melody in unison as a series of "whoa-oahs." If the 83-year-old Italian composer was watching the Movie Awards, he heard his composition mixed up for the modern electro age.

"Jaws Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)": Who hasn't tried to play the "Jaws" theme on a piano at some point? It's so simple yet so brilliant, like "Chopsticks" for people who want to remember how terrified they were to go into the water. The music from future "Star Wars" composer John Williams certainly helped Steven Spielberg kick off the modern blockbuster featuring the scariest fish since Moby Dick (OK, technically, neither were fish); they re-teamed on several other films.

"Imperial March (Martin Solveig Remix)": "The Imperial March" has been synonymous with ominous evil, impending doom, villainous tyranny and light sabers that only come in the color red since the original "Star Wars" movie kicked off an enduring worldwide phenomenon in 1977. It's impossible to hear this theme without picturing Darth Vader boarding the starship transporting Princess Leia, holding that guy up in the air by the throat and demanding to know various things. So cool!

"Superman Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)": Hey, what do you know! Another John Williams score. And another grandiose theme that's synonymous with the film. The music instantly conjures the image of the late, great Christopher Reeve soaring through the skies of Metropolis as Superman. Whether battling Kryptonian super villains, trading barbs with Lex Luthor or romancing Lois Lane (let's not mention that Richard Pryor entry), Supes was defined by this killer theme.

TROMSO, Norway (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday ventured north of the Arctic Circle and urged international cooperation in a region that could become a new battleground for natural resources.

On her trip to the northern Norwegian city of Tromso, she conveyed that message of working together in one of the world's last frontiers of unexplored oil, gas and mineral deposits. The region is becoming more significant as melting icecaps accelerate the opening of new shipping routes, fishing stocks and drilling opportunities.

To safely tap the riches, the U.S. and other countries near the North Pole are trying to cooperate to combat harmful climate change, settle territorial disputes and prevent oil spills.

"The world increasingly looks to the North," Clinton told reporters after a two-hour boat tour of the nearby Balsfjord and meeting with Arctic scientists. "Our goal is certainly to promote peaceful cooperation," she said, adding that the U.S. was "committed to promoting responsible management of resources and doing all we can to prevent and mitigate the effects of climate change."

At the least, the U.S. and the other Arctic nations hope to avoid a confrontational race for resources. Officials say the picture looks more promising than five years ago when Russia staked its claim to supremacy in the Arctic and its $9 trillion in estimated oil reserves by planting a titanium flag on the ocean floor.

The United States does not recognize the Russian assertion and has its own claims, along with Denmark, Norway and Canada, while companies from Exxon Mobil Corp. to Royal Dutch Shell PLC want to get in on the action. China also is keeping a close eye on the region.

Moscow has eased tensions somewhat by promising to press any claims through an agreed U.N. process. But Washington has yet to ratify the 1982 Law of the Sea treaty regulating the ocean's use for military, transportation and mineral extraction purposes.

With 160 countries having signed on, the Obama administration is making a new push for U.S. Senate approval. Refusal puts the U.S. at risk of getting frozen out of its share of the spoils.

Arguing for its ratification at a recent Senate hearing, Clinton said the treaty would offer the U.S. oil and gas rights some 600 miles into the Arctic. She said American companies were "equipped and ready to engage in deep seabed mining," but needed to join the treaty to take exploit oil, gas and mineral reserves.

On Saturday, in the eight-nation Arctic Council's home city, she stressed that the international agreement "sets down the rules of the road that protect freedom of navigation and provides maritime security, serving the interest of every nation that relies on sea lanes for commerce and trade."

The Arctic's warming is occurring at least twice as fast as anywhere else, threatening to raise sea levels by up to 5 feet this century and possibly causing a 25 percent jump in mercury emissions over the next decade. The changes could threaten polar bears, whales, seals and indigenous communities hunting those animals for food, not to mention islands and low-lying areas much farther away, from Florida to Bangladesh.

The changing climate also is changing the realm of what is possible from transportation to tourism, with the summer ice melting away by more than 17,000 square miles each year. During the most temperate days last year, only one-fifth of the Arctic Circle was ice-covered. Little of the ice has been frozen longer than two years, which is harder for icebreakers to cut through.

Europeans see new shipping routes to China that, at least in the warmth and sunlight of summer, are 40 percent faster than traveling through the Indian Ocean, the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea. A northwest passage between Greenland and Canada could significantly speed cargo traveling between the Dutch shipping hub of Rotterdam and ports in California.

The Arctic Council is hoping to manage the new opportunities in a responsible way. It includes former Cold War foes U.S. and Russia, but Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said governments were prepared to deepen cooperation "in a region that used to be frozen, both politically and climatically."

"Now there is a thaw," he said.

Last year in Greenland, Clinton and her counterparts from other nations took a small step toward international cooperation by agreeing to coordinate Arctic search-and-rescue missions for stranded sailors and others.

Officials are now trying to enhance the cooperation, including through joint plans to prevent oil spills in an environment that would make cleanup a logistical nightmare.

The U.S. has been championing measures such as shifting away from dirty diesel engines, agricultural burning and hydrofluorocarbons to lessen the effect of short-lived greenhouse gases that are a particularly potent source of climate change in the Arctic.

Myanmar's Suu Kyi says she's too busy for Facebook

BANGKOK (AP) ? Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is bullish on democratic reform, but she's not so sure about Facebook.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner ? who was held under house arrest as a political prisoner for much of the past 22 years without even a telephone ? was asked Friday at the World Economic Forum on East Asia when she would join the 900-million member social network.

She said it was not an issue with adjusting to new technology, but a matter of finding the time. She said she will join when her schedule opens up.

"Mind you, you never know what will happen with the technological revolution," she said at a news conference. "Facebook may be old hat tomorrow. In that case, I won't go on Facebook."

Under Myanmar's previous military junta, her countrymen with Internet connections were blocked by a government firewall from accessing many sites. The reformist but still military-backed government elected last year has since eased most of those restrictions.

Suu Kyi herself had a broadband internet connection installed at her house shortly after her release.

Suu Kyi also said Friday that she is a big fan of mobile phones, and opposes Myanmar's tight licensing rules on them.

"This means that we cannot promote the distribution of cellphones as much as we would wish to, and I think we would all agree that cellphones are very important in both the political and economic opening-up of any country," she said.
